6 Natural Ways to Boost Immune System Without Supplements

Natural ways to boost the immune system may be the best approach to maintain healthy immune function. Some people might like the ease of using supplements, but healthy living choices could help provide continued strength for the immune system.

Here are six natural ways you can boost your immune system without supplements:

Warning: Antibiotics Not a Solution, Use This First

1. Instead of getting vitamins and minerals through supplements, nutrients from food sources provide the balance and harmony your body needs. Harvard Medical School recommends eating a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A diet low in saturated fat provides natural nourishment.

Although more studies on the effects of nutrition on the immune system are needed, Harvard Medical School notes that people who are malnourished or live in poverty have a high risk for infectious diseases.

2. Garlic might help strengthen the immune system to fight cancer, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Researchers have shown that garlic appears to kill cancer cells in test tubes. Studies also suggest lower risks for colorectal cancer among people who consume raw and cooked garlic. Garlic supplements don’t appear to have the same results.

3. Excercising daily — taking daily walks or doing an exercise routine a few times a week — is an easy way to naturally boost the immune system, says MedlinePlus, an information site for the National Institutes of Health. Regular physical activity may prevent colds, flu, and other airborne diseases by helping to flush unhealthy bacteria out of the lungs and airways. Exercise also promises to slow the release of stress hormones to protect against illnesses.

4. Vitamin D is among the nutrients your body needs for a healthy immune system. Although you can only get small amounts through foods, the sun provides the body with plenty of vitamin D, according to the Vitamin D Council. You don’t need to tan or burn your skin because the vitamin absorbs into your skin in half the time before that happens.

5. Get enough sleep to keep your immune system functioning properly. Too little sleep could increase cortisol hormones, which suppress the immune system.

6. Some of the easiest and most natural ways to boost the immune system are to avoid smoking and drink alcohol in moderation. Tobacco smoke and excess amounts of alcohol weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of lung infections.
