When the night is long and sleep is short many people turn to natural sleep supplements to help get a good night's sleep. While scientific research has shown there are few provable sleep benefits and some serious potential risks to the use of these natural sleep supplements, some stand by their use as safe and effective.

Here are five natural sleep supplements that can potentially help you get better rest at night:

1. Kava: This derivative of a Pacific Island plant has long been used by native islanders. It is known for its ability to relax and calm. In the United States it has been promoted as a natural sleep supplement. The University of Maryland Medical Center warns there are some links between Kava usage and liver damage. So, use with caution and consult a doctor.

2. Valerian: Valerian herbal medicines are made from the root of this flowering plant which is native to Europe and Asia. According to WebMD, valerian has a sedative effect on the brain and nervous system. The product may not have an immediate effect and might have to be taken for a few weeks before any results.

3. Melatonin: Melatonin is the naturally occurring hormone in the brain that regulates sleep cycles. When this hormone does not release properly, is reduced or fails to work efficiently the whole body can be affected. Melatonin can be taken in a manufactured form. The National Sleep Foundation advises that research is promising, but needs more investigation. It can shorten the time it takes to fall asleep and is often used for children.

4. Chamomile: This ancient herbal remedy has been used to treat a variety of health problems, like hay fever and hemorrhoids. According to Molecular Medicine Reports, the science behind the benefits of this little yellow flower is solid. The treatment of insomnia and other sleep problems has been a traditional use of the natural supplement and science backs that up.

5. Jamaican Dogwood: The rootbark of this plant is used for sleep problems. According to WebMD it can reduce anxiety and can be used for ongoing pain problems. However, there are serious concerns about the safety of this natural sleep supplement because it slows down the nervous system. While it has been helpful, it can also be used as a poison. It has not been extensively studied in humans. So, talk to a doctor before use.
