In an effort to get back up to full speed after an injury or illness, many people turn to natural health supplements to boost their healing process.

Although more studies need to be conducted, some initial studies have found that a combination of supplements significantly sped up wound healing. A study performed at the University of Texas Medical Center determined that people who used a supplement called InflammEnz, which contains a cocktail of natural health supplements, saw healing about 17 percent faster than those who did not, cutting about three days on average off of their healing time.

Here are four supplements promoted for healing properties that doctors urge their patients to consider with caution:

1. Bromelain:
An enzyme found in pineapples, this product is generally considered safe. However, side effects may include diarrhea and stomach discomfort. For those who have allergies to latex, carrot and fennel, taking bromelain may also cause an allergic reaction, according to WebMD. It might also increase bleeding risks before and after surgery.

2. Grape seed extract: Some studies showed this supplement can help rebuild blood vessels and allow Vitamin C to enter cells more easily, according to WebMD. More testing needs to be done to determine conclusively the healing properties of grape seed extract. Also, grape seed extract can interact with other medications, particularly blood thinners like NSAID painkillers, heart medicines, cancer medicines, and others.

3. Vitamin C: This common supplement is considered safe, but experts advise caution if taken in large quantities (more than 2,000 mg daily), some of which are kidney stones and severe diarrhea, reports WebMD. For people who have had kidney stones previously, even amounts in the range of 1,000 mg can cause problems.

4. Zinc: This popular supplement is used to treat a variety of conditions, everything from macular degeneration to the common cold and malaria. However, experts say this mineral should not be taken on a regular basis without discussing its side effects with a doctor. Taking this supplement with other drugs could be dangerous. For example, nasal sprays containing zinc were found to sometimes cause permanent loss of smell, according to WebMD. Regularly taking more than 100 mg a day for 10 years can double the risk of prostate cancer.
