Inflammation and infection of the prostate gland, or prostatitis, may require medical attention. However, there are some natural foods and drinks that also can help.

Here are nine of them that may help treat a prostate infection:

1. Water
The Prostatitis Foundation suggests drinking large amounts of water as a basic way to improve prostate health and keep bacteria flushed from the urinary tract.

2. Cranberry juice
According to the Prostatitis Foundation, cranberry juice helps dislodge bacteria so that it can be passed out through urine. It helps minimize the risk of infections spreading between the prostate gland and the bladder.

3. Green tea
Prostate.net explains that green tea is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that helps improve prostate health.

4. Probiotics
These beneficial bacteria can help promote prostate health, says Prostate.net, and they can be found in yogurt and kefir as well as nutritional supplements.

5. Pumpkin seeds
These seeds contain essential fatty acids that promote a healthy prostate, says Home-Cure. The site recommends 80 grams of seeds daily either eaten whole or ground up and sprinkled on other foods.

6. Tomatoes
Home-Cure says tomatoes contain antioxidants that help the body ward off infection, including lycopene which can help reduce the frequency of urination.

7. Watermelon seeds
Both Home-Cure and the Prostatitis Foundation recommend watermelon seeds as a natural aid for the prostate because of their natural diuretic properties and unsaturated fatty acids that help maintain the optimal pH in the prostate.

8. All fruits and vegetables
Prostate.net explains that poor diet and poor overall health are risk factors for prostate infections, and large amounts of fruits and vegetables can help reverse this condition.

9. Parsley
This leafy herb is a natural diuretic and contains compounds that help flush bacteria away, says Home-Cure.

In addition to these foods, herbal supplements containing couch grass, saw palmetto, and skullcap, among many others, can also be beneficial for prostate health, according to the Prostatitis Foundation.

Prostate.net suggests limiting intake of caffeine, spicy foods, and alcohol to maintain prostate health.
