Inflammation is a natural response to illness or injury, and many seek natural cures for the condition marked by redness, swelling, pain and heat.

Spices, including turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, garlic, cayenne, black pepper and clove have been found to reduce inflammation in the body, Healthline noted.

Foods, including bell peppers, pears, mackerel, spinach, black tea, buckwheat, pomegranate seeds, may help reduce inflammation, Time magazine noted.

Inflammatory bowel disease may be eased by increasing nitric oxide in the lining of the gut with fisetin — which is present in apples, persimmons and strawberries — and citrulline, found in watermelon, beets, and spinach, according to a study by the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Supplements also include components that have been shown to reduce inflammation. Here are seven natural cures for inflammation.

1. Vitamin C — Supplementing vitamin C has been shown to lower C-reactive protein, a general marker of inflammation, according to Oregon State University.

2. Quercetin — Flavonoids such as quercetin have anti-inflammatory properties, according to OSU.

3. Hesperidin — Found in citrus fruits, this flavonoid has anti-inflammatory properties, according to the journal Current Medicinal Chemistry.
