Aguilar, who was in his late teens at the time of the shooting, purchased the Mossberg gun legally from a Maryland gun shop. According to an article in Guns Save Lives, Aguilar passed a background check. The article also noted that, while the gun was legal to purchase in Maryland, it was not legal for Aguilar to carry the gun or to bring it into the mall.

The owners of the United Gun Shop, where Aguilar purchased the Mossberg, told the Washington Post Aguilar came to their store in December of 2013 looking for a home defense weapon. Based on what Aguilar said he was looking for, the owners suggested a basic 500 model, which they described as “an entry-level gun.”

The Mossberg 500 Aguilar purchased was a 12-gauge pump action gun with a pistol grip, the article said. The owners of the gun shop said the basic Mossberg 500 would be easy for a beginner to accurately use in a small area.

It would also have been easy for Aguilar to disassemble the Mossberg 500, which measured 35 inches in length, and store it in a small bag, such as a backpack, the Post article said. In fact, on the day of the shooting, Aguilar walked into the dressing room of a skateboarding and clothing store with a backpack and later emerged firing the gun.

Aguilar paid more than $400 for the Mossberg 500 plus two rounds of ammunition,CBS Baltimore reported. He likely had little trouble walking out of the store with the gun: Maryland requires just one form to be filled out to purchase a shotgun. CBS Baltimore noted that handguns require five forms.

The Mossberg 500 has been produced since 1961. More than 10 million 500s have been manufactured since then. The Mossberg website said no other shotgun has sold that many units in such a short period of time. The model is known for its reliability.
