Trying to figure out if you have mononucleosis (commonly called "mono" or "the kissing disease"), can be rather tricky because it can mimic other conditions. It has been determined that most people have been exposed to this virus when they were younger or during their teenage years. People who have been exposed to the virus have built up immunity to any further infections.
The stages of mono include the first three days when the initial symptoms will show. These symptoms include lack of energy, fatigue, loss of appetite, and having chills. The next stage is when more intense symptoms occur after the initial three days. These intense symptoms of mono include a sore throat that could be severe, a fever of 102 to 104 degress, and swollen lymph nodes.
If you have these symptoms, you should visit your doctor in order to find out exactly what is wrong. Your doctor will take blood tests in order to rule out strep throat and to determine if the diagnosis is really mono.
Mono is a viral infection that will cure itself on its own once it passes through the system. There is no specific treatment that the doctor can recommend other than taking over the counter medications such as Tylenol in order to help lower the fever and give the patient relief from body aches or headaches that they may have.
Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. Doctors believe that this virus can stay in the body many months after the initial infection. This is why mono is rarely diagnosed and the illness is treated as a viral infection
