A new war movie released in 2014 quickly grabbed the top spot in this modern war movies box office category, usurping the previous leader, “Saving Private Ryan.” That move is “American Sniper,” and although some say it got mostly snubbed at the awards this year, it was still one of the most popular and talked-about movies of 2014. Read on to find out the 10 highest-grossing war movies at the box office.

“American Sniper”

Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood legend, and he delivers again as the director of “American Sniper.” His movie has been up for 27 awards and walked away with nine so far. It’s raked in $344 million. And American Sniper is not just the highest grossing war movie of all time; it was 2014’s highest grossing film as well, according to Business Insider.

“Saving Private Ryan”

Another mega director, Steven Spielberg, was at the helm of the second war movie on this list, directing a cast that included Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. It’s also the 128th highest grossing film at the box office of all time.

“300”

So maybe “300” isn’t about a war that happened in A.D., but the epic storyline of 300 Greeks taking on a 100,000-strong Persian Army is a classic depiction of the underdog standing up against the odds.

“Pearl Harbor”

This movie received its share amount of flack from war movie enthusiasts who felt it was more a love story than an accurate war story, but nonetheless “Pearl Harbor” ranks as the fourth highest grossing box office for war movies.

“Lincoln”

Daniel Day-Lewis blew everyone away with his rendition of President Lincoln during the Civil War, winning Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at the Oscars.

“Rambo: First Blood Part II”

As the oldest movie to make our list, Rambo ventured into the jungles of Vietnam and came out with $150 million at the box office.

“Platoon”

A year after “Rambo” was released, another Vietnam War movie came onto the scene, depicting a very young soldier dealing with the horrors of war.

“Lone Survivor”

The most modern war movie on this list, “Lone Survivor” depicts a special mission team tasked with killing a Taliban leader in 2005 only to be left on their own to survive. Mark Wahlberg plays the lead role.

“Good Morning, Vietnam”

One of Robin Williams’ most memorable performances is from “Good Morning, Vietnam” as an outspoken DJ that earned Williams’ an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and Best Actor win at the Golden Globes.

“Mulan”

“Mulan” is possibly the most surprising movie on this list of top grossing box office war movies because it’s both an animated film and a female warrior in the lead role. Regardless, 1998’s “Mulan” brought in $121 million.
