Minnesota Staycation: 7 Fun Things to Do While Staying Close to Home

Minnesota offers natural surroundings, history and entertainment for a family vacation or staycation. The state is popular for summer trips, but offers opportunities all year round.

Here are seven places that make a trip to Minnesota enjoyable for everyone in the family.

1. Visitors enjoy biking, inline skating or just sightseeing along the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway. The legendary Paul Bunyan produced the lakes around the area, so the story says. Today, people take advantage of fishing, hiking or nature trails along the byway, as well as the galleries, boutiques and gift shops around Pine River, Pequot Lakes and Crosslake. The wide paved shoulders of the byway are ideal for bicyclists. There are plenty of restaurants and recreational activities around Whitefish Chain of Lakes and Pelican Lake. Visitors can stay at campgrounds and resorts.

2. Find out what it was like for aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh to grow up at his home in Little Falls. The home is a national historic landmark and is located near the Charles A. Lindbergh State Park with trails to explore. Guided tours are available daily. The visitors center features exhibits and also has information on the surrounding trails in the park.

3. The Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors was done with construction in 1910, as a result of several shipwrecks that occurred earlier. It is also considered a national historic landmark, the lighthouse has been restored to vintage condition and includes a keeper's home and fog signal building. Tours are offered and visitors can shop at a museum and gift store.

4. The Minnesota History Center in St. Paul has a wide range of exhibits and interactive programs for children and adults. There are permanent and revolving exhibits throughout the year. Special events include exhibits that feature history players from Minnesota's past who perform during weekends and during the summer weekdays. Visitors can learn about the everyday lives of the famous and ordinary people of Minnesota's history.

5. A visit to Saint Paul includes the wonderful city parks and squares. Stroll the banks of the Mississippi River or visit city sights that include the magnificent State Capitol. Families on a vacation or staycation will enjoy the nearby zoo, conservatory and picnic areas. Enjoy the contemporary artwork at the Minnesota Museum of American Art or browse the shops and old mansions of the city.

6. Minneapolis has a friendly Midwestern feel along with attractions of a big city for a family vacation or staycation. Visit museums during the day or have fun with the nightlife. Festivals and events are held throughout the year. Restaurants feature the finest Greek, Moroccan and Vietnamese delicacies, as well as other world-class foods that offer international diversity. Easy travel is available through the Minneapolis Light Rail for shopping or entertainment.

7. Red Wing is known for its museums, pleasant views along the banks of the Mississippi River and such landmarks as the St. James Hotel and the Red Wing Shoe Store, maker of the world's biggest boots. Red Wing is also a naturalist's haven with fishing, boating, skiing, biking and hiking. A trek around Mount La Grange allows visitors wonderful views of Lake Pepin, or enjoy watching towboats, fishing boats and cruisers on the water from Levee and Bay Point parks.
