Minimum Wage: 3 Facts About Hawaii's Minimum Wage

By    |   Monday, 01 Feb 2016 07:25 PM

There is no question that Hawaii is a beautiful place to live. It's a string of islands in the South Pacific that are home to gorgeous beaches and turquoise-hued water, sunny skies, and an endless summer — but if you're only earning the minimum wage in Hawaii, you'll be struggling to enjoy your environs, as the cost of living here is far from cheap.

Here are three things to know about Hawaii's minimum wage:

Urgent: Do You Think the Minimum Wage Should Be Raised?

1. It's lower than the living wage
According to a living wage calculator created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it would take a minimum wage of at least $9.30 per hour for a person to live in relative comfort in Hawaii. And this is at the low end of the spectrum for people living in non-touristy or rural areas. In Maui and Honolulu, however, the living wage is much higher. In Honolulu it is calculated at $14.66 per hour for a single adult — nearly double the current minimum wage of $7.75 — and $28.15 for a parent raising one child.

2. Minimum wage is slowly being increased
The minimum wage in Hawaii is currently set at $7.75, up 50 cents from 2014, and it will rise over the next three years to a max rate of $10.10 per hour, which will match the goal that President Barack Obama set for all states to increase their minimum wages to. Hawaii was one of three states to first adopt this new wage into law.

3. Even at $10.10 per hour, it's still a struggle
Even when the new state minimum wage of $10.10 per hour becomes fully effective in 2018, this is still likely to be lower than the cost of living in Hawaii, which is also bound to increase with inflation as time passes and also does not account for the high cost of living on the islands in general. That said, the rate is still well above the federal poverty line, which is set at earnings of $6 per hour or less.
