5 Christian Groups Working for Peace in the Middle East

By    |   Monday, 11 May 2015 05:04 PM

The Middle East is home to just under 15 million Christians today, but the land holds sites of unquantifiable value to the history of the faith. Christian organizations have long strived for peace in the Middle East war in the region could lead to the extinction of the faith there.

The Middle East has long been a region of strife, war, and death. The growth in this cycle of violence in recent years is beyond that seen in millennia. Civil wars in Syria, Iraq and Libya, violent upheavals in Egypt and the continuing war between Israel and the Palestinians are just some of the problem areas. The rise of Islamic State and their use of indiscriminate murder against those who may oppose them, is of grave concern to all right thinking nations.

Here's are five Christian groups working for peace in the Middle East:

1. Churches for Middle East Peace: The Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) was formed in 1984. It is an organization of twenty-two national church groups and Christian denominations of the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions. The CMEP aims to influence U.S. foreign policy by making the experience of its churches in the Middle East better known to government decision makers. The organization is tax-exempt, a nonprofit and funding comes from individuals, local churches, national churches, and ecumenical groups.

2. Middle East Council of Churches:
The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) is an umbrella group for all the Christian faiths in the Middle East. Its members strive to find unity among the Christian faiths and peace in the troubled region. Since its formation, the MECC has helped form a forum for discussion among the Christian faiths of the Levant.

3. Middle Eastern Christian Outreach: Middle East Christian Outreach (MECO) is a group working on the ground for peace in the Middle East. The group formed in 1976 bringing together other organizations in the region to spread the word of Christ throughout the land of his birth. They work with other Christian churches in the Middle East to bring peace to its people.

4. Christian Peacemaker Teams: In the late 1980s, like-minded Christians organized in Chicago to form a non-violent grouping to work in areas of conflict. Through these meetings a structure for the training and support of the Christian Peacemaker Teams evolved. Today these trained Christians maintain projects in Iraq and Palestine working with local people to end conflict by spreading the message of peace.

5. Presbyterians for Middle East Peace: A group of lay and clergy members of the Presbyterian faith who have come together to work for peace in the Middle East. They try to establish clear facts on what is happening on the ground in the Middle East and so aim to influence Presbyterian policy for the area. By working alongside those in the conflict, the group aims to understand the sources of the violence and help bring long-term peace.
