Meningitis: How Your Diet Plays a Role

Monday, 14 March 2011 04:13 PM EDT

Immediate medical attention is needed for meningitis, but as you recover from the condition, it is very important to ensure the proper balance of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants to fight this infection.

The immune system can be strengthened by taking multivitamins containing vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and minerals. A diet with adequate proportions of essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins also is considered beneficial.

Recent research and publications encourage the incorporation of more essential fatty acids, whole grain carbohydrates, antioxidants, and niacin for people who are recovering from meningitis. Lean meat, chicken, peanuts, salmon, and turkey are rich sources of niacin.

American ginseng, astragalus, and echinacea are just a few herbs recognized for their ability to prevent or treat meningitis. Walnuts, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin seeds, and fish are also beneficial for treating meningitis.

Always consult your doctor before any supplements, even herbal, are included as a part of your meningitis treatment.
