Memory loss can be a scary experience for older Americans. While lapses in memory could be a sign of a more serious problem, some doctors suggest dementia-like symptoms could be reversed if caught and treated early.

For minor memory problems, here are five home remedies and good habits than can boost brain power:

1. Alter your diet: Most fruits and vegetables are going to help increase your memory, but some are better than others. Cleveland Clinic Chief Wellness Officer Dr. Michael Roizen says leafy greens like spinach, kale or collard greens should been eaten fresh and raw for the most benefit. Blueberries, tomatoes, apples and onions are also high on Dr. Roizen's list for boosting brain power. According to The New York Times, chocolate in the form of cocoa, has also shown to significantly improve scores on memory tests.

2. Keep a routine: Use calendars, clocks and other schedule keeping devices to help with minor memory problems. Storing items in the same place each time you use them and sticking to a routine for repeated daily tasks can also help with focusing and improving memory.

3. Try meditation for reducing stress: Researchers have found promise in the use of meditation to improve memory and brain function in people who have already experienced some memory loss. A 2010 study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found that even an eight week program of meditation showed some evidence of improved brain function for research participants.

4. Sleep: This simple and rewarding task is often neglected. Specialists recommend between seven to eight hours of sleep for the brain to operate properly. A 2015 study in the Behavioral Brain Research journal found that sleep deprivation actually caused changes in part of the brain that made it more difficult to learn.

5. Try nutritional Supplements: While a lot of supplements promise to give memory boosting power, vitamins B12, Vitamin E and cholorgenic acid, found in green coffee bean extract have shown to be better when it comes to boosting brain power.
