4 Mobile Apps for Memory-Boosting Games

As people age, the brain and the processes involved in memory begins to slow, but an unlikely source may help you sharpen it — your mobile phone.

A professor in the Keck Center for Integrative Neurosciences at the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Michael Merzenich tells WebMD, “The decline you're noticing is real — and it starts before age 30. A 60-year-old brain takes in information two to three times slower than a 20-year-old brain.”

Researchers have found that mobile app games can help boost memory function. Here are four apps to try that might help you sharpen your memory.

1. Lumosity
Designed by neuroscientists, Lumosity has a mix of scientific and cognitive games to help stimulate the brain. It boasts more than 60 million users and focuses on providing daily problem-solving puzzles. Lumosity is available for free on both Apple's iOS and Android.

2. Eidetic
This app that uses spaced repetition to improve memory. Spaced repetition is sometimes used by developing flashcards and continuing to rehearse and repeat until new information is learned. Both Android and Apple users can use this free app.

3. Brainscape
Brainscape claims its use of confidence based repetition, which is "based not on a random algorithm nor on the user’s past history of correctness, but rather on the user’s own judgment of confidence in each piece of information," can help learners' study time be more optimized. "Brainscape is most useful when learners have a strong intrinsic motivation to learn the topic at hand," a whitepaper about the app concludes. Brainscape has a free iOS app, and while there is no Android app yet, they've created a mobile-friendly website you can access from your browser.

4. NeuroNation
With more than 60 game-based exercises that focus on reasoning, memory, and perception, NeuroNation automatically adapts the games to your skill level to assure challenging games, but not overwhelm for the user. It's available free for both iOS and Android users.
