1. Uno is a family card game that’s especially helpful for kids to improve critical attention skills. A deck of 108 cards includes cards with different colors and numbers. Players match the color, number or symbol of a card. Preschoolers learn to stay focused and play the same color, according to Parenting.com. Children also learn pattern recognition to understand objects and numbers that can help with math skills. Children and adults use logic and reasoning when playing the game.

2. Battleship sounds like a war game because players aim to destroy an opponent’s fleet of ships. But the strategy to protect one’s own ships while defeating the enemy involves memory and problem solving. Planning, reasoning, and concentration play roles in hiding ships while the suspense builds.

3. Scrabble allows players to use their memory skills at making words, but also helps to increase their vocabulary. Since players get points for words, children benefit from the math involved. The game also challenges the mind to use creativity and strategy, helping to improve attention skills and long-term memory, as noted on Lifehack.org.

4. Chess, a revered game for centuries, uses concentration, strategy, forecasting and memory. Two players move pieces that represent each side in a medieval warfare setting. The object is to capture an opponent’s king. Regular players use past matches from memory to utilize their originality in moves, often taking chances, which also helps to enhance their intelligence.

5. Chronology deals with historical events. The game also improves memory, teaching or reawakening those dates and facts in history. Players collect timeline cards with historical events and place the cards in chronological order on their own timeline. A player keeps the card if the historical time on the timeline is correct, but loses it to an opponent to use if it is incorrect.
