Louisiana is relatively lax in their gun laws, as the state considers itself to be a “sportsman’s paradise,” and for some families, hunting is a way to put food on the table. When gun control laws come on the table for other reasons — criminal violence, urban safety — there is spirited discussion.

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

1. Gun Violence Statistics. Some critics argue that Louisiana makes the case for gun control nationally because of statistics related to gun violence. A 2013 report by the Center for American Progress rated the Bayou State as #1 in gun-related violence. Citing fatality statistics complied by the Centers for Disease Control, the report stated that gun violence in Louisiana kills an average of one person every day.

2. Requirements. Permits are only required for handguns. Outside of concealed-carry requirements, Louisiana does not require individuals to register or license their firearms. The state also recognizes open carry laws; meaning individuals are welcome to carry a sidearm publicly without penalty.

Visitors to Louisiana who wish to carry their weapon openly are welcome to as well. Some restaurants even encourage patrons to exercise their right to bear arms while visiting their establishments, even offering discounts to those who carry a firearm inside, as reported by Time.com

3. Reciprocity. As a reciprocity state, Louisiana recognizes permits from other states. Those who choose to exercise this freedom are required to abide by Louisiana’s laws regarding firearms. For example, possession of a firearm in a school zone, bar, or court room is forbidden.

4. Gun Control Measures. Although Louisiana is considered to be gun-friendly, in recent years there have been steps to keep guns out of the hands of felons and especially those convicted of domestic violence.  An article in the Huffington Post detailed how the National Rifle Association, while initially opposed to this type of control, backed off after several states began passing such measures.

5. Gun Safety. In 2013, Louisiana State Rep. Jeff Thompson acknowledged that gun control is necessary, but education about gun safety is important as well. “We need to make sure those who are responsible, lawfully have the ability to protect themselves and their families. But there needs to be some responsibility on those individuals intentionally or recklessly doing harm to others,” he told the New Orleans Times-Picayune (nola.com).

Significant changes to Louisiana’s gun laws remain to be seen, but will undoubtedly face opposition based upon past attempts.
