The use of marijuana (cannabis) has been shown to help people suffering from several conditions, and Maryland House Bill 881 (passed in 2014) legalized the practice within the state. The drug can reduce nausea and vomiting (often associated with chemotherapy), reduce pain and spasticity, and increase appetites (important for cancer patients and others). Currently, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized use of medical marijuana; however, the federal government has yet to take similar action to legalizing weed for medicinal purposes.

According to the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), Maryland residents who suffer from the following conditions can purchase and use the drug: cachexia, anorexia, or wasting syndrome; chronic pain, nausea, seizures, and/or severe or persistent muscle spasms.

Marijuana has been used to treat illness for thousands of years, and the emperor of China praised the drug for helping those with gout, rheumatism, and other conditions. Medical marijuana can be purchased in various forms. It can be smoked, inhaled in vapors, eaten in foods (especially baked goods) or taken in pill form.
