In a career that spanned nearly six decades, James Stewart provided audiences with plenty of drama and humor. As a result of his talents and his persona, Stewart’s list of awards and career highlights is significant.

1. Stewart earned five Academy Award nominations, winning once for “The Philadelphia Story” in 1940. In 1985, he was honored by the Academy a second time and given an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement.

2. The actor was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 1965, and was also presented with the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award in 1980, the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 1968, and the Kennedy Center Honors Lifetime Achievement Award in 1983.

3. Part of Stewart’s life that is often overlooked (at least when discussing his achievements in the entertainment industry) is his distinguished career in our nation’s armed forces. He was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1941 and flew 20 combat missions during World War II.

4. On March 31, 1944, Stewart was appointed operations officer of the 453rd Bomb Group before his promotion to chief of staff of the 2nd Combat Wing, 2nd Air Division of the 8th Air Force. He remained in the USAF Reserve and was promoted to brigadier general on July 23, 1959. He retired on May 31, 1968, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

5. For service to his country, James Stewart was awarded the Commendation Medal, Croix de guerre, Distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.

6. Stewart was the first major American film star to serve in uniform during World War II. In fact, he was so well regarded for his service to the country that then-President Harry Truman was quoted as saying, "If Bess and I had a son, we'd want him to be just like Jimmy Stewart," according to Military Hub.

7. In his personal life, Stewart was also a success. He was married to his wife, Gloria, from 1949 until her death in 1994. The couple had twin daughters, and Stewart was a father to Gloria’s two sons from a previous marriage, according to Biography.com.

Her death was soon followed by Stewart’s on July 2, 1997. His lasting life’s achievements are etched in the minds and hearts of those who admire him.
