Jack Nicholson has been a Hollywood mainstay, winning numerous awards and recognition as one of the greatest actors of our time.

Nicholson has been a particular favorite of the Academy, garnering the second-highest total nominations in Oscar history with 12. The only person he trails is fellow acting icon Meryl Streep, who has a staggering 19 nominations.

Of those 12 nominations, Nicholson has won three times. That may seem like little, but it actually ranks as one of the highest win totals for any actor. His first ever Oscar win was in 1975 for Best Actor in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” By then that was already his fifth nomination, with his very first ever coming in 1969 for Best Supporting Actor in “Easy Rider.”

He followed that up with two more wins in 1983 for Best Supporting Actor in “Terms of Endearment” and in 1997 for Best Actor in “As Good As It Gets.”

His most recent nomination was in 2002 for Best Actor in “About Schmidt,” meaning that 33 years transpired between his first and latest nomination.

But the Oscars aren’t the only organization to honor the famed actor; he received seven British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations (with three wins), a mind-blowing 17 Golden Globe nominations (six wins), and he even won a Grammy. That’s right, a Grammy. No, he didn’t produce an album of Christmas songs or country covers, but rather he provided narration for an animated retelling of popular children’s book “The Elephant’s Child” in 1987.

That’s a pretty hefty haul of awards, but it doesn’t stop there. He’s received many more accolades, including awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, the American Film Institute, Screen Actor’s Guild, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and even a Nickelodeon Teen Choice Award.

While the awards are impressive in their own right, so is his overwhelmingly prolific work. We all know that he’s acted in numerous films, more than 50, but did you also know that his fingerprints could also be seen behind the camera? He directed three movies, produced six, wrote nine screenplays, and appeared in several stage plays.

It’s the summation of all these accomplishments and awards that make Jack Nicholson truly “as good as they get,” The Telegraph said.
