Cost of Illegal Immigration in Washington

By    |   Thursday, 15 Oct 2015 03:30 PM

Unauthorized immigrants provide the state of Washington with tax revenue from their work. However, the cost of illegal immigration still puts a financial burden on the state’s taxpayers.

In 2011, immigrants made up 16.2 percent of the workforce of Washington, about 572,207 workers. In 2010, about 5.1 percent (or 190,000 employees) were unauthorized to work in the U.S, according to a report by the Pew Research Center.

About 3.4 percent of the state’s population were unauthorized immigrants. That number equates to about 230,000 people in 2010.

According to the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy, in 2010, illegal aliens paid a little more than $292 million in state and local taxes, the American Immigration Council reported. Sales taxes accounted for $270.8 million and $21.3 million was paid in property taxes. If these same people were authorized to live and work in Washington, that number would increase to $312.3 million in state and local taxes. And if these people were suddenly gone, Washington would lose more than 71,000 jobs and some $14 billion in economic activity.

Even with the taxes paid by unauthorized aliens, the cost burden to the state for illegal immigrants is significant. A 2012 study by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimated the costs to be about $2.7 billion to Washington state taxpayers.

The taxes paid by unauthorized aliens were estimated to meet about 7.4 percent of the costs for services provided to them from the state, FAIR reported.

FAIR estimates that providing education for the children of illegal immigrants costs about $1.6 billion annually, including supplemental services such as English as a second language support. The additional financial burden for law enforcement, policing, court and prison costs due to illegal immigrants adds $176 million annually to the residents of Washington state. Health care and other social welfare programs are estimated to add $652 million annually to the tax burden of Washington state residents.
