Trying to decide when and where to go hunting in Nebraska can be tricky. What areas are best for each type of game? Where are the approved access routes to public hunting lands? Finding the answers to these questions can be difficult and become a chase in and of itself, but luckily the state of Nebraska has instituted several online and mobile options to help hunters plan and navigate their trips more easily.

For those new to hunting in Nebraska, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission maintains an informative and up-to-date website complete with guides for all the types of game in the state and the laws accompanying the hunting of those animals. These resources are all available online or can be saved as PDF files for future use, helping hunters efficiently and effectively plan their trips while ensuring compliance with all state laws.

The Commission also provides an extensive variety of maps that depict a wealth of information. For instance, one map tracks all recent mountain lion sightings in the state, while another indicates all locations of Nebraska State Parks and Recreational Areas. Additional maps pinpoint public access spots, public hunting areas, and public fishing areas, so hunters are always just a click away from finding the hunting grounds closest to them.

More recently, the Commission has created a mobile app called ArcGIS that makes all of these useful maps available to hunters on their mobile devices for free. Compatible with Apple, Android, and Windows products, ArcGIS offers a personalized approach to the online maps. Hunters can bookmark their favorite spots, add their own photos to different features in the maps, and plan their hunts by previewing different locations around the state.

Another mobile app available to Nebraska hunters is Pocket Ranger. Free to all users, this app uses GPS and GIS Map technology to track a hunter’s current location and set waypoints for the hunt. The app also connects hunters to one another through a friend-finder feature, and a list of all activities available in Nebraska’s parks is included as well. Additionally, the app includes several features aimed to keep hunters happy and safe. Rules and regulations for Nebraska’s parks are always available, and hunters can quickly and easily confirm overnight reservations right from their mobile devices. Perhaps the most innovative and important aspect of the app, is that it can provide GPS coordinates to pre-decided contacts in emergency situations.

There is no shortage of tools for hunters planning trips to Nebraska. Thanks to their ease of use and lack of fees, these resources provide valuable information to hunters through fast, easy interface,s and allow hunters to produce detailed plans for trips without even leaving home.
