Hunting in Wisconsin: Top Spots for Hunting in the Badger State

By    |   Tuesday, 01 Dec 2015 04:50 PM

For the outdoor enthusiast looking for the best places for hunting in Wisconsin, there are a lot of options. With over 6.3 million acres of public land open to hunting, it can be hard to narrow down the best choices.

Here are some of the top places to hunt, each for its own reasons.

Clark County Forest & Jackson County Forest
These are two public forests that should not be overlooked. Central Wisconsin has a large amount of public forests that are open to hunting, and Field and Stream considers Clark and Jackson County Forests two of the best. The reason for this is the active logging, which makes forest openings, creating good deer food and winter cover. This makes the deer population denser than in other regions of Wisconsin. Field and Stream recommended hunters identify logged areas and trace animal travel routes between them. It takes effort, but doing this will make for more success for hunting in this area.

Appleton
According to Outdoor Life, Appleton was ranked among the top best hunting and fishing towns in the United States. One of the attractions for hunters is the whitetail deer population, as well as the hundreds of thousands of geese that migrate through the region each fall. In addition to deer and geese, other commonly hunted species in Appleton are ducks and pheasants.

Buffalo County
This is a top destination, according to Travel Wisconsin, which named this region as the state’s deer hunting utopia. The reason for this title is that more record book bucks are harvested per square mile in Buffalo County than any other county. Field and Stream magazine called Buffalo County the “Whitetail Deer Capital of the World.” This does not come without its challenges. The topography of the area is varied, with high ridges, narrow valleys, and consistent wind. This is one of the reasons there are so many record-breaking buck sizes.

Vernon County
It has been named as a good hunting location because of the variety of game to hunt. It is popular for waterfowl, pheasant, small game, turkey, and deer hunting. This gives all kinds of hunters an ideal location to try.
