Finding the best place to go hunting in Oregon is kind of like finding the best place to live. It all comes down to the best location.

So where are the top spots for hunting in the Beaver State? Here are a few of Oregon’s public hunting hot spots:

1. Siuslaw National Forest
Field and Stream magazine says it’s one of the 10 best public lands for hunting elk — if you’re "willing to do a little legwork and put up with a lot of rain." The coastal park spans more than 600,000 acres and features four major rivers. So if fishing is your thing, salmon and steelhead abound in these parts.

2. Umatilla National Forest
On the northeast part of the state, this forest makes up 1.4 million acres in the Blue Mountains. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it draws more than 30,000 hunters a year for its Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, black bear, and mountain lion. Hunters also go after game birds like turkey, blue grouse, spruce grouse, chukar partridge, gray Hungarian partridge, and mountain quail.

3. Central Cascade Mountains

The Cascades run from British Columbia down through Washington and Oregon to California. As Game & Fish magazine noted a few seasons ago, the Cascades area in Oregon is a classic spot for elk hunting because hunters can predict when the elk will move along the mountain. In the fall, hunters intercept them on the lower slopes of the Cascades.

While those spots are well-known for Oregon hunters, outdoorsman and “Hunting Oregon” author Gary Lewis can give the low-down on everywhere from the Siskiyous to the Wallowas. “There is no better way to see it, to live it,” he says on his site, Gary Lewis Outdoors, “than with a good pair of boots and a gun or bow in hand.”
