Hunting in Missouri: 4 Animals To Hunt in the Fall

By    |   Friday, 29 May 2015 04:39 PM

Fall is a much-anticipating hunting season for most hunters, including those in Missouri, as visions of whitetail deer dance in hunters’ heads.

Missouri offers solid hunting options throughout the state, especially around the Missouri River and Ozarks area, the latter often being referred to as the outdoor recreation capital of the state.

Here are four animals with open hunting seasons in Missouri during the fall:

1. Badger
Toward the end of fall, badger season opens up and hunters are not restricted by bag or possession limits when it comes to this animal. Interested hunters must have an archer’s permit, small game permit, or a trapping permit in order to pursue this game that is considered part of the weasel family.

They can be readily found in grasslands, and the Wildlife Code of Missouri allows landowners to also kill badgers on their land any time of year. If hunters wish to pursue badgers with dogs, they must do so after the beginning of December to avoid disturbing deer hunters.

2. Bobcat
These large cats share the same open season as the badger, from mid-November to the end of January. Also like the badger, there are no bobcat daily or possession limits; however, hunters must register or tag all bobcat pelts by mid-April in order to sell, transfer, tan, or mount them.

3. Fox
This fur-bearing animal can be hunted with dogs after the firearms deer season ends in November through the end of January. They are found in highest numbers around the Missouri River, although, numbers of the red fox especially have dipped in recent years and the Missouri Department of Conservation are closely monitoring this species.

4. Deer
Archery season begins in mid September and lasts until mid-January, while firearm hunting kicks off in mid-November for just over a week and then again in mid-December through the rest of the year. Eager hunters can purchase the necessary permits in July, and bag limits are also revealed then. Hunters should also be aware that the firearms season will likely be shortened during the 2016-2017 hunting season, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune.
