By    |   Monday, 26 October 2015 03:16 PM EDT

Technological advancements have a way of not only changing how people conduct business, but also how they spend their time in leisure or sporting activities such as hunting. Iowa has taken advantage of these advancements and offers online resources and mobile apps to enhance the field experience.

Here are four such resources.

1. Pocket Ranger Guide for Iowa DNR
The Pocket Ranger Guide for Iowa DNR is a mobile app that offers many advanced features that can help hunters in Iowa find park information while on the go. This mobile app includes advanced GPS maps which make it easy to tap into trail data while keeping track of distance traveled and elapsed time. The photo waypoint feature not only allows hunters to take photos, but they are also able to record and mark coordinates. The Friend Finder feature allows hunters to keep track of family and friends that are in the parks, find locations using the built-in compass, and pass on GPS coordinates to contacts in case of an emergency. This app is available on the App Store, Google Play, and Amazon.

2. Iowa Hunting Atlas
The Iowa Hunting Atlas is designed to help make it easy for hunters to find areas that are open to hunting in Iowa. Released by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this interactive map gives hunters access to over 60,000 acres of land that is open to the public for hunting. The atlas not only assists hunters in finding basic information regarding open seasons and hunting, but it also allows hunters see the land area more clearly by providing a zoom option. The Hunting Atlas allows users to obtain directions to specific areas as well as directions on how to get from one property to another. Currently the app is only available on tablets and computers; however, the Iowa DNR is working to create a version for mobile phones so that hunters are able to access the atlas while in the field.

3. Hunting Licenses
The Iowa DNR gives hunters easy access to registering and obtaining their hunting licenses online. It also provides users with information on other recreational privileges, off-highway vehicle registration renewals, and user permits.

4. Hunting Regulations
Those who wish to go hunting in Iowa find reviewing the Iowa DNR Hunting Regulations to be very helpful. Everything that a hunter wants to know about hunting in Iowa can be found on the DNR website.
