Hunting in Hawaii: 3 Animals To Hunt Year-Round

By    |   Monday, 25 May 2015 06:48 PM

Hunting opportunities in Hawaii are limited based on what kind of animal you want to hunt and what season it is. The state maintains strict seasonal laws to prevent over-hunting and to allow each species to breed and replenish its numbers.

However, there are a few species you can hunt all year long, provided you have a valid Hawaii hunting license and follow all of the state’s other hunting and wildlife laws. If you’re open to hunting these animals, you can participate in your favorite sport year-round and hone your hunting and tracking skills no matter what season it is.

If you’re looking for hunting opportunities in Hawaii no matter what the season, consider the following three types of animals:
  1. Game mammals on private land - For most animals, Hawaii establishes hunting seasons and prohibits anyone from hunting these animals at any other time. The rules are different for private property, however. Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources says that on private land you can hunt game mammals year-round, provided you have the owner’s permission to do so. Other hunting rules still apply, though. For example, you must have completed hunter education training and have a valid Hawaii hunting license.
  2. Wild Pigs - At some public hunting areas, you can hunt wild pigs all year long. However, other hunting grounds are open for pig hunting only during specific time periods. Consult the publication “Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting," published by DLNR for location-specific rules and procedures. During an open season, you can bag one pig per day in most areas, though some have no limit.

  4. Wild Goats - Some hunting grounds are open for hunting wild goats year-round. Others have certain seasons; however, so confirm the hunting season for that location before you plan a trip. Other rules for hunting wild goats vary by location as well, DLNR said. For example, in some you can only bag a certain number per day, while in others there is no limit. Also, in some areas you can hunt only with bow and arrow, while in others you can use rifles and muzzleloaders.
