Hunting in Colorado requires that every hunter purchase a license to participate in this outdoor activity. Colorado law also requires that hunters complete an approved hunter education course before applying for any license. The law applies to anyone born in 1949 or later, and the state offers accessible courses to meet everyone’s needs.

The courses are taught by Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife (CPW) staff members and certified volunteers. Students can register for courses in a format which appeals to their lifestyle. Accommodations are available for persons with disabilities; information can be found on the CPW webpage.

Traditional classes are the preferred courses for many hunters, especially young people. These classes offer personal instruction and allow face-to-face questions on the subject covered. The classes meet for a minimum of two days, for a total of at least 10 hours. A live fire exercise is included and passing a written test is required for certification.

Online-based courses are available to minimize classroom time. Students explore coursework online at home then they complete the course requirements in a classroom. This allows the convenience of home study and gives opportunities to ask questions and take the examination in a traditional class session.
