How Long Is the Digestive System?

By    |   Thursday, 28 Apr 2016 05:25 PM

Thirty feet: That's about how long the human digestive system is if you were to uncurl the intestines and measure from the mouth to the anus.

The human digestive system is designed to take the food we eat and break it down so that the nutrients food contains can be used by the body. The digestive system starts with the mouth and includes the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and anus. From beginning to end, the adult digestive system is about 30 feet, or 9 meters, long, according to the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

Comparatively, the length of the human digestive system is about the same as the height of a typical two-story house. Another basis for comparison is that if the average man is about 6 feet tall, the digestive system is as long as five men, or the length of a first down in football, which is 10 yards.

The small intestine is the largest part of the digestive system at about 20 feet long, which is about as long as a very tall giraffe. It is in the small intestine that most digestive processes take place and where most of the nutrients are absorbed into the body. The liver, pancreas and gall bladder empty secretions into the small intestine to help break down food and allow the body to use it properly, according to WebMD.

For the digestive system to work well, it needs the right mix of healthy foods and liquids. Experts recommend eating foods that are high in fiber such as fruits and vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Drinking enough water will help your body absorb nutrients better and prevent food from getting stuck in the digestive system for too long.

Some foods tend to make digestion more difficult or painful than others. Fatty foods, dairy, and foods containing gluten may contribute to digestive discomfort, particularly if an allergy or sensitivity exists.

The digestive system is full of bacteria, many types of which are needed for the digestion process to take place. According to Health Magazine, many doctors now recommend taking a probiotic supplement or eating fermented foods, which can supply the good bacteria needed to keep your digestive system working properly.
