Histrionic Personality Disorder: Latest Medical Breakthroughs

Tuesday, 04 January 2011 10:00 AM EST

Histrionic Personality Disorder is a mental illness characterized by abnormal perception of and behavior toward situations and people. People with histrionic personality disorder have unhealthy patterns of thinking and behaving, which can affect their relationships and work.

The American Psychiatry Association defines histrionic personality disorder as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking. Its symptoms may include excessive need for approval and seductiveness. Making rash decisions, self indulgence, and a continuous longing for appreciation are other symptoms. People with this disorder usually have good social skills, which they put to use for their personal benefit. Other symptoms of histrionic personality disorder include delayed gratification and low tolerance for frustration. To deal with these symptoms and make the patients adaptable to society, there may be a need for treatment.

Histrionic personality disorder treatment includes psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and medications.

The latest breakthrough in the treatment of histrionic personality disorder is its association with peptic ulcer. The Center for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Canada conducted histrionic personality disorder research to establish the relationship between peptic ulcer and histrionic personality disorder. In the U.S., peptic ulcer patients were found to have a higher risk of this disorder.

A link was established between  neuro-cognitive impairment and histrionic personality disorder in a study at Stanford University Medical Center. This establishment is among the latest breaktrhoughs in the treatment of histrionic personality disorder.

A strong relationship has been established between histrionic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder. According to this medical breakthrough, persons suffering from histrionic personality disorder are more likely to develop antisocial behavior if they are male.

Another medical breakthrough in the treatment of histrionic personality disorder is regarding the relationship between body weight and disorder symptoms. Scientists at the University of Manitoba, Canada, have come up with a preliminary report, claiming that extremely overweight people tend to develop histrionic personality disorder symptoms. However, this claim needs to be confirmed through further research.

Due to the lack of  research on this disorder, the treatment has so far been based only on empirical clinical findings. But now, all over the world, many institutes are conducting histrionic personality disorder research in order to understand the prevalence of the disease, problems in diagnosis, and outcome of treatment methods. Let us hope that their findings will provide further breakthroughs that will be beneficial to the people suffering from this disorder.
