The company recently jumped into the national political debate concerning gun control. The Ruger controversy was the result of its online campaign encouraging firearms owners to contact their legislators and urge them to take a stand against tougher gun control laws.

According to the New Hampshire Business Review
, the Connecticut-based firearms manufacturer – whose major production facility is in Newport, New Hampshire – launched its "Take Action Now" campaign in the wake of calls for tougher gun control laws following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people, 20 of them children, were killed.

The mass shooting, which came on the heels of another shooting spree that left 12 dead at a Colorado movie theater, reignited the political debate about gun control. The online campaign, which was hosted on the Ruger website, calls for owners of firearms to fill out a form message to be sent to their elected officials and also provides contact information for people to get in touch with their representatives directly.

After speaking with Ruger CEO Michael Fifer about the overall objective of the ‘Take Action Now’ campaign and the impact he hoped it has on the national gun control debate, Guns.com reported, “There are 80 or 90 million households that lawfully own guns, but the problem is they’re a silent majority and they’re not speaking up … there are a lot of barriers to speaking up…It’s hard to break through so we decided to take all those barriers away."  It is estimated that nearly 1 million people participated in the campaign.
