Obama Gun Control Plan: 5 Times NRA Has Taken President to Task

By    |   Thursday, 23 April 2015 02:51 PM EDT

During the course of President Barack Obama’s presidency, he has made several attempts to restrict gun ownership and ban weapons he considers unreasonable.

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

The National Rifle Association, one of America’s largest lobbyist groups, believes the Obama gun control plan would hurt America, and the organization has developed several strategies to prevent this from happening.

2008: Right to Free Speech
During the 2008 elections, NRA executives spent $15 million to highlight and campaign against the then-presidential candidate’s anti-gun policies, according to an article by CNN.

2011: ATF Lawsuit
NRA lawyers petitioned federal courts August 2011 for an injunction barring Obama from allowing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives from illegally seizing weapons.

As part of a crackdown on Mexican drug cartels in 2011, Obama ordered ATF administrators to enforce a new administrative rule called Operation Fast and Furious. The new rule required gun retailers by the Southwest border to report multiple sales of semi-automatic weapons.

Second Amendment advocates at the NRA feared this gave too much power to local and federal law enforcement agencies. The guidelines allowed them to confiscate weapons and ammunition without need of a warrant.

But the U.S. Supreme Court didn’t see it that way. The justices voted in favor of Obama and the ATF and ruled the government has the right to discriminate in some cases, as explained in a summary brief prepared by Connecticut's Office of Legislative Research, available to the public.

2013: Obama’s Gun Control Overhaul
The president recommended sweeping reform that could cost $4 billion and mandated changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), an increase in police forces, and cash rewards for states that carried out new vetting policies for gun buyers.

After his announcement of the new plans, the NRA pledged the "fight of the century" to oppose them Wayne LaPierre, the NRA executive vice-president, said: "I warned you this day was coming and now it's here. It's not about protecting your children. It's not about stopping crime. It's about banning your guns … period," in an article by The Guardian.

2013 and 2014: UN Gun Treaty
America’s delegation to the United Nations helped pass an international treaty regulating sales and manufacturing of weapons, including U.S.-made handguns. But in 2013 the NRA immediately stepped in and challenged the Second Amendment violation. In 2014, the organization renewed the fight.

“The Obama administration is once again demonstrating its contempt for our fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms,” said Chris W. Cox, of the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislation Action, said in an NRA-ILA press release..
