Massachusetts ranks number 48 in a 2014 list of the best states for gun owners compiled by Guns and Ammo. The state's score of 9 out of 50 is affected by the state's strict gun laws. "The place where Americans first took up arms against our oppressors from across the pond is now one of the most difficult states in the union in which to legally bear arms." Scores were compiled based on right to carry laws, restrictions on sporting rifles, National Firearms Act rights, the Castle Doctrine and a miscellaneous category.
