Louisiana ranks number 27 in a 2014 list of the best states for gun owners compiled by Guns and Ammo. The "Sportsman's Paradise" state received a decent score of 41 out of 50 based on right to carry laws, restrictions on sporting rifles, National Firearms Act rights, the Castle Doctrine and a miscellaneous category.

Here are six spots for firearms and pistol practice in Louisiana:

1. Honey Island Shooting Range: Located within the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area, this gun range does require a Louisiana Hunting or Fishing licenses or Wild Louisiana Stamp to enter. Honey Island has a 100-yard rifle range with a metal gong for each position, a 25-yard pistol range and electronic clay throwers. Season passes are available and instruction includes M1 Garand Clinics.

"My first visit there — staff was amazing, nice and helpful! Rules are clear and the facility is very well organized and maintained," writes one reviewer on Yelp.

2. F.I.T.S. Indoor Range: Located in Slidell, this facility's "eight-lane state-of-art indoor shooting range provides customers with the latest technology in safety, target handling, air quality, sound abatement and lead disposal." Instruction includes basic safety, concealed carry as well as one-on-one private handgun training.

"I've enjoyed shooting at FITS and will continue going back. Good A/C in the hot weather, pretty good ventilation, lighting could be a bit brighter but it is plenty adequate," reads one review on BayouShooter.

3. Natchitoches Shooting Range: Operated by the Natchitoches Sportsman's Association, this range offers a 100-yard rifle range, lighted, movable target backs, a handgun range, and a sporting clay range. There is a gunsmith on duty during open hours and a proshop on site.

"May be one of the most friendly facilities I have ever been to … The local pro was kind enough to come out and give me some free pointers and encourage me to come back anytime for a refresher course," writes a poster in a shooting forum.

4. Woodworth Shooting Range: This free, public use facility is run by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. In addition to the 100 yard rifle range and 50 yard pistol range, there is a 10-target 3-D archery trail and 50 yard static archery range.

"Great place! We were new, they taught us a lot, took time with us. Amazing staff very friendly! We will be back for sure!" reads a Facebook review.

5. Precision Firearms & Indoor Range: Located in Baton Rouge, this facility has the largest shooting range in the area with two 25-yard ranges, nine 50-foot pistol lanes, and a "falling plate" rack. This facility rents handguns and machine guns and, as a Class 3 dealer, has a full firearm inventory geared towards personal defense, recreational and tactical firearms.

"The best place to shoot in Baton Rouge! What I like most about this place is the staff KNOWS what they are doing. All military / law enforcement guys, they are both knowledgeable and willing to help you learn how to shoot safely and correctly," a reviewer wrote on Google.

6. The Shooter's Club: Located in Harahan, this indoor facility has current and former military as well as law enforcement on its staff and caters to the tactical and hunter's market.

"This is the best place to go to learn how to shoot. The staff is very knowledgeable and really take their time to teach gun safety, the mechanics of the gun, and how to shoot. I felt right at home right away — really a stress free experience!" reads a Facebook review.
