One of the oldest hunting dog breeds, the Hungarian Vizsla was carefully bred by Hungarian nobility for centuries. The effects of two world wars brought the Vizsla to the verge of extinction, and the first Vizslas were brought to the United States just after World War II, establishing the American Kennel Club's (AKC) foundation stock, the Vizsla Club of America noted.

While this breed initially hunted with falcons, they have since proved superior as a gun dogs as well as a top competitors in all aspects of canine competition. Additionally, this gun dog possesses key characteristics that make it a great pet for the right family.

The Hungarian name, Vizsla, means "pointer," and serves as an important reminder of the breed's primary purpose as a hunting dog. Because he is bred to have an active job, the Vizsla does best with an active family who will provide consistent daily exercise. The AKC recommended "frequent periods of on-leash and off-leash activity" for this breed. Puppies should be introduced to birds and guns at an early age by an experienced hunter if hunting is a possibility in the dog's future.

The AKC affirms that the Vizsla tends to get along well with children and other family pets, and is "lively and affectionate to its people." With a personality described as "gentle, affectionate, energetic, and eager," the Vizsla ranks at No. 33 on the list of most popular dog breeds.

With its medium stature and short coat, the Vizsla requires minimal daily maintenance for the active family. The short coat sheds year-round, so regular brushing, along with the use of a shedding blade, is helpful in managing the shedding.

Another trait that makes the Vizsla a great family pet is its high level of trainability. A necessity for gun dogs, an above-average aptitude for training helps the Vizsla acquire the good manners that can make it shine as a pet. It also makes life easier for the family that is training it.

The Hungarian Vizsla is an excellent gun dog whose high energy level, affectionate temperament, low grooming needs, and ease of training make it a great pet for an active family.
