Gun Dog Breeders: Grooming Tips for Drahthaar

By    |   Wednesday, 02 March 2016 05:18 PM EST

The Drahthaar is a gun dog of medium size, described as well-muscled, with sweet oval brown eyes and round ears, with a coat covered in shades of brown or white roan. A Drahthaar from a gun dog breeder can be as friendly as he is intelligent.

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance dog as far as grooming is concerned, a Drahthaar may not be your best bet. They are average shedders, and to keep up with Drahthaar coat maintenance, its fur will need to be brushed twice a week, preferable with a brush containing firm bristles.

This dog’s coat is what protects him from the wet and cold, weather he may experience while serving as a hunting companion and his hair, which is coarse and wiry, should lay flat against the body, measuring about two inches, according to PetWave.

Drahthaar coats also require some “stripping,” which means plucking hairs by hand occasionally. Keep in mind that their inner coats become thick in winter but are typically thinner in summer. According to Dog Breed Plus, some owners find they also need to have their pooch’s coat thinned in the spring and in the fall.

PetWave advises bathing the Drahthaar on an as-needed basis – a regularly scheduled bath isn’t necessary. It mostly depends on the activities the pup has been involved in and whether or not he’s been dirtied up enough to require a cleaning. They do, however, recommend giving the dog’s ears a consistent inspection to check for infection or wax buildup. If it appears as though there is cause for concern, use a cotton ball and a solution that has been pre-approved by your vet to gently clean the ears.

It’s a good idea to brush Drahthaar teeth weekly to rid the mouth of any tartar buildup and keep bad breath to a minimum. You’ll know when it’s time to trim your dog’s toenails when you hear a clicking sound on hardwood or tile.
