Gun Dog: Are English Cocker Spaniels Good Dogs for Family Pets?

By    |   Saturday, 28 Nov 2015 07:13 PM

When it comes down to choosing the perfect family pet, there are many factors one must consider. In terms of the English cocker spaniel, generally speaking, they make excellent family pets.

According to the American Kennel Club, this breed, which was first acknowledged by the organization in 1945, is wonderful with children and other pets. These dogs are also fairly easy to train and even do well when left to their own devices, which is not to say they’ll want to be apart from you and your brood for long.

These happy, affectionate dogs are extremely energetic, so you’ll want to be careful of how they interact with very small children. In some instances their love and devotion may translate into play that is too rough with a little one, said Terrific Pets. However, they respond to positive training and a cheery disposition, not to mention rewards treats, really well.

Terrific Pets also advises adopting an English cocker spaniel from a breeder as opposed to a pet store, which typically do not administer health or temperament screenings to ensure for happy and healthy pooches. If English cocker spaniels have not been properly vetted, they could have negative characteristics like biting, aggression, and neurotic behavior.

Nicknamed the merry cocker because of the breed’s jolly disposition, the English cocker spaniel will need plenty of exercise. You may also want to consider that the English cocker spaniel is larger in size than the American cocker spaniel, and comes from a long line of dogs bred for hunting purposes, hence why they need much time outdoors, running around.

Although the English cocker spaniel doesn’t require a ton of training, Dogtime.com recommended obedience training for them as they need to learn how to observe your commands. You also don’t want to let those sweet, giant eyes, and floppy ears sway you, English cocker spaniels need to learn to come when called by their owner.
