Gun Dog: Are Drahthaar Good Dogs for Family Pets?

By    |   Sunday, 22 Nov 2015 12:24 PM

Drahthaar pups fall under the breed organization of the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America and are sometimes referred to as a German wirehaired pointer or pointing dog. They make for good family pets, although with a propensity toward stubbornness and jealousy in the presence of other dogs, The Furry Critter Network noted. This gun dog will need solid training with a touch of flexibility on the part of the owner.

Drahthaars are a loyal and traditionally unflappable breed who are also quite gentle, making for a lovely companion. These dogs tend to do better in the suburbs or rural areas where they have a lot of space to run. Residing in an urban environment is doable, but not perfect for the Drahthaar, who will need at least two long walks a day, The Furry Critter Network said.

If your family is very active and sporty, this could be a match made in heaven as these dogs love to be on the move. If your brood tends to be a bit more sedentary, or it’s just impossible for you to work your pet as much as a Drahthaar would like, you may want to consider another breed. For as loyal as these dogs are, if you don’t have the time or energy to exercise them, they’ll find other ways to release their energy, and you probably won’t find their choices cute or playful.

Owners can expect a Drahthaar to live for approximately 12 to 14 years, although some are predisposed to conditions like hip dysplasia, ear infections, genetic eye disease and skin cancer, the Dog Breed Info Center noted.

Drahthaars are medium in size, weighing anywhere from 60 to 70 pounds, another trait that makes them particularly good playing the family pet role. Something to note – if this dog notices that its owner is weak, chances are he’ll become particularly wayward or difficult, so consistency is key when training and handling a Drahthaar and certainly something to keep in mind while teaching children how to behave with him as well.

And, of course, if you are a family of hunters, the Drahthaar is incredibly skilled at assisting, with the ability to track, point and retrieve on any type of terrain.
