Some health advocates have promoted green coffee bean extract pills as a cure all for everything from weight loss to cancer. While side effects may be few, those sensitive to caffeine may have potential risks.

Green coffee bean extract pills are high in chlorogenic acid, a chemical found in coffee beans before it is roasted. Experts believe chlorogenic acid is thought to have various health benefits for weight loss, heart disease and others.

Exciting Discovery: Ancient Herb Offers Natural Thyroid Support

Green coffee bean extract pills became popular in 2012 after it was featured on "The Dr. Oz Show," promoting its weight loss benefits. The claims, however, were later debunked and the marketer who made them, as well as the company which produces one of the most popular forms of the extract were both fined by the Federal Trade Commission for inflating their claims.

The side effects of taking green coffee bean extract pills are quite similar to drinking one too many cups of coffee.

In addition to the chlorogenic acid, green coffee extract pills also contain caffeine. It's extremely important to take coffee bean extract pills with caution if you have a sensitivity to caffeine as some side effects may include insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, nausea and increased heart rate.

Exciting Discovery: Effective Nutrient Formulation Surprises Scientists

Authority Nutrition warns that the chlorogenic acid may have a laxative effect in some people, causing diarrhea. Also, if there are known allergies to roasted coffee in general, taking green coffee extract pills may not be the answer.

According to WebMD,
based on the limited research that has been conducted on people thus far, green coffee bean extract pills are possibly safe. There have been no serious side effects when taken by mouth at the appropriate doses.

Much like regular coffee, green coffee bean extract pills may cause additional side effects such as headache, anxiety, agitation and irregular heartbeats. Speak to a medical professional before taking the extract.
