The merits of green coffee bean extract and its side effects continue to be debated, as the medical community tests marketing claims of the substance's weight loss effectiveness, as well as other health benefits.

A green coffee bean is an unroasted coffee bean, in addition to caffeine, the extract contains chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant whose levels are lowered during the coffee bean's roasting process, according to WebMD.

The efficacy of green coffee bean pills to increase metabolism and spur weight loss has been challenged by the FTC, but consumer testimonials boast that the natural health supplement met expectations and the extract remains a popular supplement.

As the discussion continues, other potential benefits and side effects have been examined. One of those is whether GCE pills pose a particular danger to women. Puregreencoffee.com listed various side effects, including whether there is a potential danger to pregnant women.

"Although there have been no reports of harmful side effects to pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, no studies can support that coffee bean extract will not affect children," reads a review on the website. People who have allergic reactions to coffee are also advised to take this type of supplement with caution."

WebMD also urged women who are pregnant or breast-feeding to stay on the safe side.

"There isn't enough reliable information about the safety of taking green coffee if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use."
