'An Inconvenient Truth'

The 2006 documentary
, directed by Davis Guggenheim, follows former Vice President Al Gore in his presentations about the threats of global warming and includes scenes where Gore relates his personal experiences and viewpoints. The film won Academy Awards for best documentary and best song, and a series of classroom lessons was developed for use along with the documentary.

The film also drew criticism, including from some climate scientists. There was criticism of the film’s alarmist elements and controversy about showing the film in schools, according to the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.

'The Great Warming'

Narrated by Alanis Morissette and Keanu Reeves, the film examines how climate change is affecting the world and looks to technology to creating a sustainable future. It is filmed in eight countries and based on the book "Storm Warning: Gambling with the Climate of our Planet” by Lydia Dotto.

“Just as other generations spoke of a Great Plague and a Great Depression, our children will be compelled to endure the Great Warming — and find a way to conquer its consequences,” a statement on the film’s website says.

'The Island President'

Directed by Jon Shenk, the film follows Mohamed Nasheed’s first year in office as president of the Maldives and includes his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009. The film “provides a rare glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on at such a top-level global assembly,” the film’s website says. A lot is at stake for Nasheed, as a rise of three feet in sea level would make the 1,200 islands of the Maldives uninhabitable.

'The 11th Hour'

The 2007 documentary, written and directed by Leila Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, examines how people affect the earth’s ecosystems and what we can do to change our course.

'What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire'

Written and directed by Timothy S. Bennett, the film attempts to break through denial of environmental crisis.  According to the film’s website, Bennett “reviews his Midwestern roots, ruthlessly examines the stories he was raised with, and then details the grim realities humans now face: escalating climate change, resource shortages, degraded ecosystems, an exploding global population and teetering global economies.”
