Global Warming: 6 Activist Groups That Have Sprung Up to Oppose Fracking

By    |   Monday, 30 Mar 2015 09:58 AM

Many global warming activists believe that fracking threatens the food and water supply as well as the climate. The liquid injected into the ground for natural gas contains chemicals that pose a threat to health, they charge.

As a result of the anti-fracking movement, many activist groups have been created to protest what they deem to be a toxic process. Here are six activist groups that have sprung up to oppose fracking:

1.
Californians Against Fracking aim to ban fracking throughout the state. The organization also has a goal of banning other "extreme oil and gas extraction techniques in California." The group is made up of several organizations, including those in the environmental, health, business, agriculture and political fields. The Center for Biological Diversity, which engages in anti-fracking protests, is an environmental group that is part of the Californians Against Fracking.

2.
The Gas Drilling Awareness Coalition is based in Dallas, Pennsylvania. The group settled with the state in 2015 when it was labeled as a terrorist threat in 2010, according to NPR. The organization is concerned about processing facilities located near urban or suburban areas. One of the group's goals is to protect property rights in the establishment of gas drilling and development. Activists want natural gas companies to prove fracking will not contaminate water, soil and air.

3. Frack Free Colorado wants to educate people in the state on the dangers of fracking. The group wants the public to focus on alternative sources and renewable energy. The organization is comprised of many activist groups throughout localities within Colorado. Frack Free promises to "protect Coloradans’ basic rights to clean water, clean air, a safe home, and a sustainable future."

4. Americans Against Fracking make it clear about their goal — "to ban fracking." The group works with other groups and activists on the national, state and local levels. The organization claims it has won victories by stopping plans for fracking along the Delaware River and helping to create more than 250 municipal measures against fracking. The coalition is for any organization, business or institution that opposes fracking.

5. In the United Kingdom, the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition has been calling on the government to end fracking and replace the focus on low carbon energy systems. The group calls gas from shale a form of "unconventional gas" that is mainly made up of methane, which releases carbon emissions. Stop Climate Chaos states fracking will end up burning more gas to increase global warming effects.

6.
Reclaim the Power engages in protests against fracking throughout and near London. In 2014, activists with the group occupied a Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs facility in London, according to No Dash for Gas. Three activists "superglued themselves to the doors" of the facility to prevent access, according to the group. Activists also claimed to have shut down the Swansea Bay campus of Swansea University where education on fracking takes place.
