Ginkgo Biloba: Sources and Uses

Ginkgo Biloba herbal formulations are becoming popular worldwide and are the best selling herbal medications in Europe and the United States.
 
Ginkgo Biloba is a living fossil with a lifespan of 1000 years. It is alternately called “Maiden Hair tree” or “Kew tree” and is a native of east Asia.
Organic cultivation of Ginkgo Biloba (pesticide free) has also become popular.
 
The ginkgo biloba tree has short branches with fan-shaped leaves and grows up to120 feet. Its leaf has 40 components out of which two chemicals; flavonoids and terpenoids, are medically effective. However, its fruits and seeds are generally not used due to their toxicity, although the Chinese have been using them.Ginkgo Biloba extract is made from the dried leaves of the tree.
 
Nutrition bars, soft drinks, and fruit smoothies are also fortified with Ginkgo Biloba to boost memory. Herbal tea is made from its dried leaves.
Formulations of Ginkgo Biloba include: Ginkgo Biloba Capsules, Tablets, Extract, and Liquid extract. Ginkgo Biloba capsules are available in 40 mg, 60 mg, and 120 mg potency. Ginkgo Biloba extract capsules have been proven beneficial in treating dementia and tinnitus.
 
Ginkgo Biloba tablets and capsules are preferred to its tea.Ginkgo Biloba is a brain herb whose extract is highly concentrated and is used in treating Cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. It has been used in traditional medicine to treat circulatory disorders as it dilates blood vessels and reduces the stickiness of blood platelets.
 
Ginkgo Biloba extract is considered otherwise safe, but sometimes produces stomach upsets, headache, and skin reactions. Patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, or epilepsy should never take its herbal preparations.
 
All its herbal formulations are also contra-indicated in patients taking anti-depressants and anti-coagulants. Children, pregnant women, and women breast feeding must not use any of the Ginkgo Biloba herbal preparations.
 
Use of Ginkgo Biloba extract is not advised before any surgery since it causes bleeding.
