Georgia is a peach of a place to plan family vacation or staycation. The state combines a rich historical legacy with an amazing natural landscape.

Here are seven places to visit in Georgia:

1. MLK's Birthplace: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, GA. That is where you can take your family to the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site, teach your kids how a man who was born into a time of segregation grew up to become a great leader and national symbol in the fight for Civil Rights. Among the sites to visit here include the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and King's final resting place.

2. Stone Mountain: The confederate history of the area can be seen at Stone Mountain. It is the site of the largest bas-relief carving in the world. The carving on the side of the mountain depicts three leaders of the Confederate States of America. Stone Mountain Park surrounding the carving  includes a skyride aerial tram or trails for those who want to reach the summit of the mountain. Other sites to visit at the park include a stone quarry and scenic railroad with a full size locomotive from the 1940s that will take you around the five mile base of the mountain.

3. See Rock City: Lookout Mountain boasts a spot where you can see seven states. Rock City Gardens  near Chattanooga has been a tempting family vacation or staycation spot for decades. The slogan "See Rock City" became a cultural icon in the 1930s to 60s. These days the park still tempts visitors with a 100-foot waterfall and "lovers leap." The park offers bird shows to add to the staycation experience.

4. Tybee Island: About 20 minutes outside Savannah this island gives visitors beaches, a 1773 lighthouse and a museum at an 1898 coastal artillery batteryFort Screven.

5. Savannah: Known for its historic area and quaint shopping, dining and entertainment, this town has plenty to tempt every member of the family. For a great family vacation or staycation try out the Savannah Riverboat Cruises. They company's harbor sightseeing cruise offers a one hour excursion that gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of the area. Trolley tours are also a great way to see the sites.

6. Visit a plantation: Three historic plantations are preserved as state historic sites. Enjoy the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation in Brunswick, the Jarrell Plantation in Juliette or the Wormsloe Historic Site in Savannah Wormsloe.

7. Atlanta: Atlanta was the site of the 1996 Olympics and the home of Coca-Cola. Your kids will enjoy getting their own Olympic experience at the Centennial Olympic Park  which now sits on the site of the 1996 Olympic games. Nearby they can enjoy the World of Coca-Cola Museum, which showcases the world's most popular drink.
