Taking probiotics may be helpful for those with geographic tongue.
Geographic tongue is a harmless condition in which areas on the surface of the tongue are without the tiny, white or pink bumps, known as papillae,
the Mayo Clinic described. These spots usually appear like red islands, giving the tongue a map-like appearance. The lesions may cause discomfort or sensitivity to certain substances.
Probiotics are the “good” bacteria in the body and promote healthy digestion, immunity, and mental health.

The cause of geographic tongue remains unknown, but there may be connection to a skin condition known as psoriasis, the Mayo Clinic reported. More research is needed to understand the link, however.
Probiotics have been shown to be helpful in treating some skin conditions since they overcrowd bad bacteria in the gut as well as strengthen the gastrointestinal lining, preventing toxins, foreign invaders, and waste from getting into the bloodstream and causing inflammation throughout the body,
Live Science reported.
The cause of the condition is unknown,
according to the American Academy of Oral Medicine, which said possible factors include emotional stress, habits, allergies, diabetes, and hormonal disturbances.
Some treatments for geographic tongue include topical anesthetics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

The Daily Mail reported that in recent studies probiotics have been shown to benefit general health and help treat diseases unrelated to the gut, including autism and psychological illnesses.
Probiotics are available in some dairy products, such as yogurt, and many fermented foods, including kombucha and kefir. Supplements have been made in the form of pills, capsules, powder, and other means.
Newer products include the possibility of applying probiotics topically to target specific locations, especially when it comes to skin conditions. These merchandises include lotions, facial masks, and other beauty supplies,
Daily Makeover said.
Most treatments for geographic tongue have not been extensively tested, according to the Mayo Clinic.
