Five Reasons Why Global Warming is Responsible for California's Drought

By    |   Tuesday, 12 May 2015 12:45 PM

The drought that has plagued California for the past three years has been labeled as one of the worst in recorded history. It is devastating and the situation increasingly desperate. Research has shown that global warming is linked to this drought, and here are four reasons given by some of the brightest minds on the planet.

1. Greenhouse Gases
In a new release from the National Science Foundation, climate scientist Noah Diffenbaugh from Stanford University and his colleagues found that "a persistent region of high atmospheric pressure of the Pacific Ocean – one that diverted storms away from California – was much more likely to form in the presence of modern greenhouse gas concentrations." They also established that the issues were three times more likely to occur in the current climate than the one that was around in pre-industrial times.

2. Fossil Fuels
Climate change is largely responsible for pushing the temperatures higher and this is having an impact on the atmospheric conditions that determine the weather for the region. In turn, climate change is being created by the radical increase in fossil fuel burning, which is currently 25 percent higher than levels from 1958, reported an article in the Washington Post.

3. Unsustainable Energy
Global warming may well be connected to this drought, but there were droughts recorded for the area long before people burned fossil fuels and engaged in unsustainable practices around resources and water conservation. What is relevant here is not so much that the energy usage of the world has caused the drought completely, reports CNN, but rather that the fossil fuels and wanton misuse of resources is causing this problem to happen more often and more virulently.

4. Severe Weather

There have been floods, fires, and droughts across the world. Many are linked to climate change and global warming. The California drought has been worsened thanks to global warming, reports US News and World Report.
