Fishing in California: Online Resources and Mobile Apps to Enhance the Experience

California’s abundance of freshwater lakes and Pacific Ocean border make it a great place for fishing aficionados.

“With 1,100 miles of ocean coastline, 220,000 square miles of ocean waters, 4,172 lakes and reservoirs, 29,664 miles of streams and rivers, and 1,800 miles of bay and delta waters, California has more fishing opportunities than any other state in the country,” according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

But with so many places to choose from, how do you know where to go? Luckily, the CDFW has online resources and mobile apps to help fishers choose the best spots and make sure they’re in compliance with California law.

The CDFW maintains a fishing page to inform residents and visitors about ocean and freshwater fishing regulations, tips for catching specific species of fish, and current announcements.

If you’re on the go, here are a few quick, helpful resources:

Fishing and Diving Records
The CDFW keeps a current list of record catches of every species of fish known in its waters. Classifying catches by their length and weight, the list provides fishermen and women with info of the best catches for every type of fish they might find, giving them something to which to compare their catches. Additionally, the list tells the location of each record-breaking catch, giving those eager to find a particular type of a fish a good place to start the hunt.

California Outdoors Q&A
California Outdoors Q&A is a weekly column in which 20-year CDFW member Carrie Wilson answers local hunters’ and fishers’ questions. This relaxed but informative page is an excellent place to start if you’re trying to find the answer to a question of your own. The site offers both informative and pragmatic segments, teaching people about California wildlife and the best ways to interact with it.

Fishing Guide
The CDFW’s Fishing Guide provides outdoors enthusiasts with a wealth of information including areas that are historically good for fishing and the locations of Marine Protected Areas. The Guide also highlights fish planting locations – rivers and lakes where fish from hatcheries are released – and schedules. The tool is still a work in progress, and the department has been adding information about fishing license sale locations and boating facilities to the site. For those who are already in the field, all of this information is also available in the form of a mobile app which can be downloaded from the main website.

California Fishing Maps
This Google Play app lists more than 17,000 lakes and areas to fish within the state. Users can search by county, area, or name.

Ranked one of the top mobile fishing apps, this Android app helps anglers find fish on U.S. waterways.
