Fishing in Arkansas: Top Spots for Angling in the Natural State

By    |   Monday, 28 Dec 2015 06:50 PM

With six major river systems and several mammoth lakes, there's no shortage of locations to choose from when deciding where to go fishing in Arkansas. On top of that, there's a wide diversity of aquatic wildlife lurking beneath the surface of Arkansas's many waterways. Figuring out where to fish means first deciding what to fish for, as different areas are better suited for certain species.

"Few places in the U.S. offer the astounding variety of freshwater fishing opportunities that are available in the Natural State," says Game & Fish Magazine.

With so many great options available in Arkansas, settling on a spot can be arduous. Here are five of the best spots for angling in the state.

1. The Arkansas River
This takes the top spot due to length alone, as it spans more than 300 miles. As a result, it has exceptional public access, making it easy for anglers to navigate. While many types of fish swim in its waters, the Arkansas River is best suited for trout fishing. It's an official brown trout fishery, although that doesn't mean catching trout will come easy.

2. Lake Ouachita
Lake Ouachita was once dubbed the "Striped Bass Capital of the World," and is one of the foremost destinations in the country for bass fishing. The lake is more than 40 miles long, covers 40,000 acres, and holds several bash fishing tournaments throughout the year. "Lake Ouachita should be on every bass fisherman's bucket list, because this lake has it all," writes Knoji.

3. Lake Conway
This lake is best for catching catfish, especially during the summer, when it's produced several record-sized catches. Game & Fish magazine elaborates: "This 6,700-acre Arkansas Game and Fish Commission lake just off Interstate 40 east of Conway serves up some of the world's best fishing for trophy-class flathead catfish."

4. White River
Another excellent spot for trout fishing, White River provides visitors with some of the best trout fishing for both beginners and experienced fishermen.

5. Little Red River
This river is most known for its excellent fly fishing, and its plentiful supply of rainbow trout. "The Little Red is anything but little in the hearts of trout fishermen who flock to the river in search of big fish," says the Arkansas Department of Parks & Tourism.
