Top 5 Employers in Oklahoma: Which Companies Have the Most Jobs?

By    |   Monday, 13 Apr 2015 11:00 AM

Businesses and organizations related to military, healthcare, and aviation are some of the largest employers in Oklahoma. The companies with the most jobs are located in Oklahoma's two largest cities: Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Here is a look at the top five employers in Oklahoma:

1. Tinker Air Force Base: Located in Oklahoma City, the base is named for Maj. Gen. Clarence L. Tinker, an Oklahoma native who was killed in Japan during World War II. Throughout the years, Tinker Air Force Base has repaired engines, bombers, and aircraft used in military efforts. The first female African American Air Force general, Brig. Gen. Marcelite Harris, was welcomed to Tinker in 1990.

Tinker was also the location for the first civilian to lead a major military installation, Robert Conner, in 2005. Tinker employs about 26,000 military and nonmilitary people, and has a statewide economic impact of about $3.6 billion, plus the base creates an estimated 33,000 secondary jobs.

2. Cimarron Alliance Foundation: With just over 10,000 employees, Cimarron, a civic and social organization, is one of the largest employers in Oklahoma. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit company focuses on equality for Oklahoma's LGBT community. Cimarron Alliance recently merged with The Equality Network to form Freedom Oklahoma, based in Oklahoma City.

3. Integris Baptist Medical Center: The non-profit, non-sectarian hospital opened in Oklahoma City on Easter Sunday, 1959. Since that time, Integris has grown from 200 beds to 511, with Centers of Excellence in burn care, cancer treatment, and rehabilitation, among other areas. Currently, about 10,000 people are employed within the Integris Health system, which has hospitals and health-related facilities throughout Oklahoma.

4. St Francis Hospital:
Located in Tulsa, St. Francis is one of the largest employers in eastern Oklahoma. The not-for-profit Catholic healthcare system has about 8,000 employees. The original buildings of the hospital are made of Italian pink marble, which was chosen for its healthy, rather than institutionalized, appearance.

5. American Airlines: About 5,000 people work at the American Airlines Maintenance & Engineering Center in Tulsa. Among them are skilled and licensed aircraft and jet engine mechanics working in state-of-the-art wheel and brake overhaul facilities located on a 260-acre campus.

American Airlines Group is the holding company for American Airlines and US Airways. The airline says it operates an average of nearly 6,700 flights per day to more than 330 destinations in 54 countries from its hubs in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C.
