4 Tell-Tale Signs An Employee May Be a Workaholic

Working too much may not sound like such a bad thing, but workaholic employees could actually do more harm than good to a business or firm.

A workaholic, according to Psychology Today’s Barbara Killinger, Ph.D, is a “work-obsessed individual who gradually becomes emotionally crippled and addicted to power and control in a compulsive drive to gain approval and public recognition of success.”

Workaholics are easy for business owners to hire because they appear almost hyper-dedicated. However, they are also prone to becoming burned out in their jobs, which ultimately leads to lower productivity.

"[Workaholics] may leave in a rush, and take all of that learning knowledge with them," Polly Wright, a senior consultant at HR Consults told Fox Business. “Then you are stuck as the business owner thinking, 'What can I do now? I put everything into this person and they left me,’” she explained.

Workaholism is so widely recognized, there is even a National Workaholics Day and Workaholics Anonymous nonprofit that aims to help affected individuals recover and cope with their employment woes.

In order to combat workaholism in your office, it is important to be able to recognize the signs of workaholics. Below are four tell-tale signs that an employee may be a workaholic:

1. They Are Always There, Even When They Are Not
Workaholics are always working. They may work longer hours and will be in the office before you arrive and after you leave. You may see a workaholic eat lunch at their desk every day, or maybe even not eat lunch at all. Even when they are not in the office, a workaholic may seem like they are, as they constantly reply to phone calls, texts, and emails instead of relaxing at home.

2. They Complain About Home Life
Because they are constantly focused on their job, workaholics have less time for family and friends and may thus have spousal or other familial problems. If an employee frequently complains they are going through problems or a divorce, yet they are always working, they may be a workaholic. Some employees become workaholics as a means to avoiding a complicated life outside the office.

3. They Do Everything Fast
Workaholics want to be productive and hence tend to do everything, from working to eating, quickly. “Workaholics walk fast, talk fast, eat fast, and over schedule,” reported Killinger. She said their fast-paced nature tends to lead to anxiety and “internal chaos.”

4. They Cannot Say “No”
Never saying “no” to new work or roles is a sign of workaholism. Workaholics aim to please and may be afraid to say “no” to an employer or co-worker in fear of disappointing them. Additionally, saying “yes” may provide new opportunities for workaholics.
