Dysnomia is a learning disability where the affected person cannot remember words correctly. Dysnomia symptoms are not clear-cut as they overlap with those of other common learning and development disorders. Dysnomia diagnosis and treatment is neither well studied nor well researched. This may be because people afflicted with this word-finding problem do not usually seek medical help.
Dysnomia diagnosis is extremely difficult as the symptoms can also be caused due to severe injury or trauma to the brain. Symptoms may also be attributed to a developmental problem with the brain that results in a learning disability.
Symptoms of dysnomia that appear either due to accidental injury to the head or stroke usually disappear on their own after a certain period of time has elapsed. However, if this word-finding problem and speech problem continue to remain for a long time, neurologists may have to conduct various neuropsychological tests for effective dysnomia diagnosis.
The word-finding problem may not be very pronounced in the beginning. The symptoms of dysnomia may start expressing themselves a little later in life when the person’s inability to recall simple words interferes with their family and work life. This learning disability is characterized by symptoms that reflect difficulty in both verbal and written expression.
What are the main symptoms of dysnomia?
· Persons affected with dysnomia are unable to recall and spell words correctly.
· They find it difficult to use common synonyms for simple words. At times, recalling the names of family and close friends becomes difficult. While the word-finding problem is extremely common, not all patients with this learning disability will necessarily have a problem with recalling names.
· People with dysnomia symptoms find it tough to understand concepts and principles that healthy people can easily grasp.
· The learning disability becomes extremely prominent when the patients have to appear for tests. They either leave the test incomplete or take a lot of time to finish it.
Another dysnomia symptom is the substitution of simple words with words that don't make logical sense. The patients may even use plain nonsensical jargon. This symptom is observed at an advanced stage of the disorder.
